We’re nearly half way through November, so I hope you’re all waist-deep in gratitude journaling (see previous post.) I wanted to share one of the journaling prompts that I used for today because it made me dig a little deeper into myself and exposed some serious truths. I know, deep shit for a Sunday, but stick with me, it will be worth it!
The prompt is this: What painful experience has helped you grow?
Frankly, my answer is: Too many to list!
But…. Once I started making a list of all the trauma that I’ve experienced in my 38 years, I started to understand better that since these experiences helped to shape me as an individual, I SHOULD actually be expressing gratitude for having gone through them. And it immediately reminded me of my most favorite quote of all time:
“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.”
Now, since this is my favorite quote, I obviously already had an understanding of the concept that what we go through shapes us, but I never once considered expressing gratitude for those experiences that led to my growth. It is a profound feeling to consider an experience that has wounded your soul and psyche so deeply, examine it, and determine it to be a blessing. We could totally jump down the philosophical and spiritual rabbit hole with this one, but I don’t want to think so hard on a Sunday. So, I leave you with some food for thought on the topic:
