Born in the third century AD, Saint Nicholas hailed from the Greek town of Patara, which is along the coast of modern day Turkey. Nicholas lost his parents when he was young, but being raised in a strict Christian home, he sold all his belongings and gave the money to the poor. Nicholas is the patron saint of children, repentant thieves, and merchants among other things.
Many stories exist involving the miracles of Saint Nicholas. Stories of resurrection, feeding the hungry, protecting ships and sailors during storms, and, of course, his most famous act, leaving ‘secret’ gifts for those in need, particularly children. And that’s where our Santa Claus legend originates! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
